Hi, I need some advice here! We have designed our home and are now in the process of figuring out what we want. Our architect has suggested spruce siding; he says it looks just as good, is cheaper, and has less waste than cedar siding. However, a friend of ours said spuce is no good and we should pay the extra $$ and go with cedar or Hardiplank. Which should we go with? BTW, we live in the pacific NW and are building a craftsman style home on a wooded lot. Which would you use out of these three? How does cost compare between these products?
Thanks in advance! Tanya

m2T,
spuce, spruce..is your friend knowledgable in this?
architects generally are. I'm in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont and would choose the cementicious
siding over wood.
Remember, its your choice and your preferences and budget.
I also like pet rocks and inflatable furniture..

*A friend used vertical grain spruce clapboards here on the Massachusetts coast, preprimed and stained. He figured it was as good as flatsawn cedar, and cheaper than vg cedar. 5 years later I'm replacing his spruce with vg cedar. Spruce isn't naturally durable, is brittle, and seems to move and crack a lot. When I think of the NW I think of natural wood--if that's the look you're into, I'd suggest cutting back on other details and spending extra on the real cedar clapboards. They'll last a long time and look great. But I'm a wood guy anyway. Good luck,Mike
*I wish I could get spruce siding here. I used to get Dolly Vardin spruce some year ago. i liked it for paint grade siding.
*Fibercement will need way less maintenance. It cost more.near the stream,aj
*I feel that the cedar sided houses going up around here with a light stain are gorgeous. However, one advantage of cement siding is that it doesn't burn - and in certain areas it is a decided advantage to come back to a cement sided house siting in the smoldering brush fire area rather than a beautiful heap of cedar siding ashes... A builder of rather nice kit homes recently told me at a home show that his kits are cheaper with Hardi siding than with cedar. One is being constructed near me with the cedar siding but I have not seen one with the Hardi siding to see how it compares.
*I've used a spruce siding called Maibec. It's pressure treated and factory painted on all sides. One house I've done 8 years ago still looks really good. No callbacks on fifteen installations. It comes in a bevel shiplap, a cove shiplap, and a vertical t&g.
*Ken...what did yaa pay per linea foot and at final square feet? We use Pine and Spruce here along with all the rest...No trouble with Spruce if painted spruce is painted well...or just let it weather for tne rustic look...near the stream,aj
*aj- The last time I purchased it (Jan.2000) it was a $1.35 CAN per lin. ft.. If you order over 5000 lin. ft, the price drops even more. It comes in several Cabot Stain colours too.
*I'll go for cedar every time. I don't think anything can beat it for looks. The only problem is the yellow/black wood bees love it and bore holes in it about the size of a 45 caliber bullet. I get 1x6 T&G for $.75 a foot
