Have what appears to be about 3/4″ of rot on the side of an 8X8 beam- Seems I’ve heard of some kind of “stabilizer” to inhibit further worsening of the condition- Is there such a thing? Thanks for any info you can provide- Dave

Minwax and Abatron (not sure of spelling of that) both make a paint-on, soaks in liquid that hardens and stabilizes slightly rotted areas.
Many thanks, Danno- I'll look for it- Dave
Name of the Minwax product is Minwax Wood Hardener.
But it only hardens up the wood fibres. Does nothing to prevent further damage. To do that you need to eliminate the moisture that was getting to it and feeding the micro-organisms that fed on the wood. They need warmth, water, and wood to build a colony and damage the wood.
If the control of the water is questionable, you need to get TimBor rods or Boracare to treat the wood with borates as a preventive, then use the hardener or epoxy to complete the job.

Piffin- Thank you- Yeah, I can see the source of the problem and deal with it- Thought I'd (uncharacteristically) treat, as well as I can, all aspects of the thing- Thanks again- Dave
There are excellent epoxy products for this type of repair. Check out http://www.rotdoctor.com and the Smith & Co. products they sell.
Thanks Dave- I'll check out those products, too- Much obliged- Dave
Don't overlook West systems epoxy as well..they got some good stuff. Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Penetrating laquer. I think there are ads in FHB. Around here they sell it in paint stores under the brand name PC woody. Also someone asked a question about preserving outside corners of what I assumed was MDF or ultralight base board. I researched a product that I don't know the name off but found it at a marine supply and it was an 'epoxy with the consistency of water' with that start I'm sure a few phone calls will warrant a score. These products petrify the wood, making it possible to repair without rot transfer.
