We are about to finish stairs by doing hardwood treads and risers over carriages built and installed at framing time.
My millwork supplier can get me solid 1×8 maple for risers, but if I want 1x10s from him, I will have to settle for a glue-up. My rise is a little over 7.25″, so if I use the 1×8 stock I will have a situation that looks like shown in the pic, attached.
See the gap at the bottom? Is this a concern?

Glue a strip on, if you joint both pieces and match the grain well you won't see it. You could use a scotia molding at the top and hide most of the added strip.

Use ply wood?

and it's even deeper..
Perfect works are rare, because they must be produced at the happy moment when taste and genius unite; and this rare conjuncture, like that of certain planets, appears to occur only after the revolution of several cycles, and only lasts for an instant.
Say that three times..
If the gap is concealed behind the tread, I dont see where this is a problem. Maybe not ideal ,but we do this pretty often with oak treads and pine risers
I agree with ADM I don't see the problem with the risers not being full depth. Your treads I assume are 5/4" material, still enough to fasten riser to tread if possible.
What Woodroe said, also assuming that the tread is 5/4"
