Hello every one, I am not a frequent poster but I know I always get good advice when I ask a question here. I am in the process of redoing some interior stairs, the bottom five stairs are concrete, not in any way square, level or plumb. I have cut skirts to match the contour of the staris and will be placinf white oak treads and risers after the skirts are in place. Ok, my problem is this; I am using a large custom base moulding on the floors above and below the stairs. I profiles the top of the skirt boards witht the same profile in order to simplify transitioning them from the skirt to base moulding. On the top landing this worked fine. On the bottom, my profilees don’t match at all! I know I am missing something simple here, can any one help???? The angle of the skirt boards is 40 degrees so on the bottom I cut a 20 d. miter and did the same on the base. Thae angle is ok but the profiles don’t match at all. Ok, I am about ready to throw it all out and start over! I’m trying to post pictures to help explain the situation.
Thanks
Karl

How do you mean the angle is ok but the profiles don't match? Are you sure both profiles are the same? I must be missing something.
I know I am not painting a good picture verbally, I htink I can post pics which will show my problem. I am having trouble on the bottom landing, not the top.
Thanks
Karl
Karl,
Find ( measure ) the angle where the base meets the floor. Bisect that number and cut the same angle on each piece of base.
Lets say you get 120* at the base, so........
120* divided by 2 = 60*
cut each piece of base at 60*, should be very close.

Dan's right. Should look like the top angle in the attached. If you really want to get fancy make the joint look just like the pic.
You made your bottom cut backwards. It should be leaning towards the right, not the left.
(First time I've ever told someone to lean to the right.)
Painting a picture that would be:
Wow - that's cool - how'd you do it - Photoshop?

Thats the same thing I thought. Very cool indeed. Woods favorite carpenter
Thanks. You're spot on :-), Photoshop, a quick copy and trim with some small patches.
great minds think alike with different software...
Noooo--- everyone must use what I'm using! ;-)
I'm actually a great fan of SU too.
And I would probably go with the "fancy" alternative, but with the top landing done I'm undetermined...
Thanks for all the excellent advice, the pictures really helped and immediatley let me see my mistakes. I have always used plain skirt boards and then put a top cap on them which makes it come out just like the picture. I'm not sure what possesed me to try it this way, trying to make it "easier" I guess! (OK, I know what most shortcuts do!) I recut the piece last night to match the picture and it will fit perfectly with just a little attention to the edges. Thanks for not laughing hysterically at my work, but, feel free!
Thanks again
Karl
Karl,
I think we all have had moments when things that were obvious a few days or even minutes before are suddenly utterly impossible, and knowing that one ought to know just makes it worse.Regards
