Try to save treads, cut out the stringers and start again. Try no nosing, or wider treads.
I was told that,if i was to add a half of an inch to each run compounding a half inch on evvy step except for the first, that it could be fixed that way what is your thought on it?
muddy, when you layout the new stringers, position one and make sure you have enough head room above the closest nosing to the stairwell opening. 6'-8'' minimum from tip of nosing. Best of luck.Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.

That may work, but how many treads are there? If you've got 13, then the last tread you have to add 6" to......you have to add to the stringer for support anyway, I'd just recut.
Course we've been using 14" LVL's for stingers for awhile....could get plenty spendy......I do layouts and cuts on stairs myself, cause I pay the bills.
You need to use 2X12 for the treads.

Bear, the layout is incorrect. He could use 2x20's and the run would still be the same. I'm afraid he's going to have to recut the stringers, which will make the stair run longer. Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.

Yes, I agree, the layout is wrong and if he uses 2 X 10s the treads will never be wide enough. He needs to layout the same rise with a new run to accomidate the 2 X 12s.Bear
we did use 2 by 12s,for the stringers and had 14 steps with 7 3/4 rise.

Your rise is good, your run is wrong. Only fix is to cut new stringers so you can use wider treads.Bear
I thought they stopped using 2x for interior stair treads in the 70's or 80's. Only time I've seen them is on reno jobs on older houses. Is that a Yank thing? We always use 1" ply.
Muddy
What are the parameters that you are working with?
You got the rise and run that you are working with ?
And as someone else mentioned, are there any headers above the stairs that you have to concern yourself with, remember that you need to have 6' 8" clearance.
You are probably going to have to cut new stringers but thats not the end of the world.
Doug
Muddy, like Doug sez, what do you have to work with? Total run and rise, and a better explanation of what you've got going on now. In 15 years of building on badly framed stairs, I've only had to totally rip out one...couldn't count how many I've had to tweak<G> Don't worry, we can fix that later!
Stair "run" is tread nose to tread nose. It ain't tread width. When you cut your stringers with an 8-1/2" run, that is the run, period.
The question really is, now, can you afford a longer total run.
