Although my basement is finished, I still haven’t done much with the existing set of stairs, which are a box set of open riser stairs made from rough lumber, and painted.
It’s obvious that whoever built them never intended for them to be finished.
I’ve batted around no end of ideas as to how to finish them, but I might as well build a new set.
What would you recommend for tread material? I’d love hardwood, but those seem like suicide steps. Carpet is not an option. I think tiling them with slate might be cool, being durable and providing a lot of traction as well, but I wouldn’t be certain how to handle the noses.

I'm not a fan of the big boxes, but I've seen fir step tread at HD. If you pick out the verticle grain pieces, and varnish them , I think your stairs would look pretty sharp.
Hey, what are you doing posting here in the middle of the day. I thought you started your new job today?
They called and said Monday, instead, and a different site. Some sort of scheduling snafu.Good observation.

Hardwood as suicide steps? Don't you have golf shoes up there?I've got yellow pine treads, and am probably twice as old as you... must be that softwood thang<G> Now you see this one-eyed midget
Shouting the word "NOW"
And you say, "For what reason?"
And he says, "How?"
And you say, "What does this mean?"
And he screams back, "You're a cow
Give me some milk
Or else go home"
