I am designing and will soon build a home for a young couple.
The house is a Texas Hill County style 2500 SF home, together with a 10 acre property, being a TX “Ranchette”.
Site issues and expense include a 600 LF gravel driveway, septic system, 220′ of underground electric service, underground propane tank, watering pond for their livestock……all issues that are necessities.
The home / property is indeed a ranchette, and the client does not want any carpet in the home. The budget, especially considering the necessities above is streached. The home is a 1 1/2 story with one 2 story section. It has a central set of turnback stairs with a middle landing. Oak or another species of wood stair treads is now pressing their budget as they make final decisons for floor covering.
Does anyone have any ideas for alternatives to wood treads that would provide ranch proof / kid proof durabilty?
My client saw some stair nose pieces for laminate floors, and asked if laminate could be placed on the stairs, but I have always viewed these as being for laminate that terminates at a stairway on the second floor.
Laminate is to be installed on the second floor. The first floor at the stair area is under consideration for floor covering, leading choices are tile or a pre-finished wood floor.
Has anyone ever used or seen laminate successfully used on a stairway and landing? It seems odd to me.
One solution, sell the cattle except the bull and 4 hefiers, save one for slaughtering and a large bar-b-que project launch party, use proceeds from the cattle sale to install wood treads on the stair and let the bull and heifers rebuid the herd.

Tex
I have used the nosing on a couple step down into another room.
The lip is too proud for my liking, and safety-wise, I would n't advise it.
We get SYP treads here that are quite serviceable.
Thanks guys.
I have talked the HO into opting for oak or alternate species treads, helping him realize some savings in assistance to us with some of the site work.
