Is it possible to install stair treads, with contruction adhesive, to the rough stringer, install the riser to the face of the stringer, without gluing the treads and risers together??
The plan is to install treads (custom made) to the rough stringer both with construction adhesive and with screws. The screw hole would be plugged with a contrasting wood .
The treads and risers are already dadoed to interlock. Am having second thoughts about making them a monolith because of possible varying wood movement. Had planned to use carpenter’s glue on dadoes and construction adhesive on rough stringers. This is the last step in a 3-month project and don’t want to mess up now. Help!!

Hey Hannah,
I don't see why not. I'm sure it won't hurt the stability of the staircase. We don't glue the riser to the tread in a regular staircase. I've never used a dado and tongue in that situation before. Usually the riser is a bit shy of the tread and that gap is covered with a small cove mould under the tread.
My only concern is the riser "squeeking" when you step on the tread as the tongue slips in the groove. This may or may not happen.

*Hannah: I would glue and screw the risers to the treads. I have never had any problems with wood movement. I am a strong advocate of pocket screwing the top of the risers to the bottom of the treads. This makes an i-beam effect out of it, and it is much stonger that nailing through the tread, plus a lot cleaner looking.
*I use the construction adhesive under the tread and dado lock the riser to it but don't glue. My understanding is that the purpose of the dado lock is to hide the wood movement instead of allowing a gap to open and let the spiders crawl though. I am speaking of the joint at the back of the tread joining the uppeer riser. Wheree it joins the next tread up is hidden by a cove molding to hide wood movement there. Too much glue tries to freeze it all in place and can lead to slit treads in a dry winter when the wood shrinks to much. The construction adhesive stops squeaks and adds to the overall strength.
