Does anyone have a good lead for a staircase tread template? I have seen many different plastic crapy ones out there but I have seen a few old timers with these fully adjustable templates for treads. I’m all ears to hear from the stairbuilders. And yes I’m routing in the stairtreads and not buying a stair kit. Custom baby.

Porter-Cable used to make one, but I think it didn't sell well.
I make my own out of Baltic birch ply. Its not hard, especially if you decide to use a template bit, with the bearing above the cutting edge.
just lay out your stairs on the ply, allow for the wedges that'll draw everything up tight, and carefully cut it out.
Andy Engel has a book out on stair building that shows how to make the template, as well as other good stairbuilding tips.
Thanks for the help gents. Could you please give me the info on that book. It sounds like it could really help. Thanks again "When the job is perfect, we're almost done."
Its been a long time but if you simply layout a slice of tread and a riser on plywood and add your wedges that is your shape. Once you have that cut out you make it slideable to move on your stringer and hit your layout marks. Search back thru the stair hackin thread and you can see a routed stringer. Its not really that hard. Good luck.
