I live in an old two story house built in 1929. Needless to say I have traversed these stairs many times over the years and they feel very comfortable. I notice that when I go up and down stairs in new houses, they feel different and not as comfortable. The other day I got to thinking about this and got out my trusty level. In checking the treads I found that they sloped back very slightly. Say 1/16″ to 1/8? Is this a practice or skill used by the old timers that has been lost in the cost cutting mass production of todays houses or was may carpenter slightly tipsy the day he built may stairs.
