I need some advice on putting in a set of switch-back, or u-shaped stairs. I will be cutting the existing floor joists and want to know what I have to consider when doing so. Would I cut them in line with the lower set of stringers(less the 3″ for the 2x’s) or shorter? I can’t picture how to tie in the newel post on those so it would be in line for the balustrade. Can you suggest a book or article?
Thanks, Ed

FHB has a book on stair building. It is basically republished articles from the mag. One great thing about it is that it has accompanying photos and drawings with very clear explanations and design idiosyncrancies of just about any kind of stair design.
Also, draw it - in plan and elevation. Yeah, I know - you have a hard time visuallizng. Just draw. Once you start drawing it will get easier. You will learn and recognize a lot when you draw it wrong. The sketches don't have to be pretty. They are a tool. They will make you think and teach you to visualize.
Keep the drawing simple. Don't start off with 3-D attempts. Just plan, then elevation so you can understand/ represent how first and second (third?) levels relate.
Also you'll learn that if it can't be drawn, it can't be built. That's a time saver in itself.
