I’m considering installing a standing seam metal roof. The installer that I contacted quoted me 26 gauge. This will be installed on a 12/12 pitch roof, over existing shingles. The house is in Maine. I’m not able to find anything about 26 vs. 24 gauge – does anyone have any recommendations?
Thank you,
Joan

Yup - tear the shingles off first. The potential for the metal getting the finish rubbed off against the old shingles is great. The longer the runs, the more it will expand and contract.
As far as 24 ga. vs. 26 ga., I've never installed anything thinner than 24 ga., but 26 ga. should be adequate for most applications, in my opinion. I would be more concerned with the finish. I've seen a lot of polyester failure. Stick with Kynar or unpainted galvalume.

I've got a 24-gauge roof on my shop. I think the whole thing looks better in heavier gauge--the trim pieces stay straighter and flatter looking. Definitely agree with what CU said about paint. To be well-informed when buying a metal roof you need to know something about paint chemistry.
