Starter cedar shingle courses for slopes
I am siding a new dormer with cedar shingles and am puzzled about starting the lower courses on the side walls that sit on a roof with a 30 degree pitch. If I want a double layer for my bottom course, how far do I extend the first course up the slope of the roof? The second course will overlap the first course but will eventually extend beyond the first double course and will change to a single course. How do I keep the leading edge doubled up all the way up the roof line?

I'm hoping this drawing can help better than words.
There is no need to run the top of the shingle in further than to the top of the flashing. That gives you at least a double layer of shingle plus the flashing material.
