steel roof

jimmyk | Posted in Construction Techniques on August 11, 2004 04:23am

FIL wants to replace old roof on his horse stable with a steel roof. We’ve done many asphalt shingle roofs, but never a steel roof. Can anyone here give some insight as to what’s involved?
Thanks.

    molten,

Get the install details from the yard where you buy the metal. Order your sheets to length. Run a stringline representing your overhang. Use screws not nails. Use lexel not silicone. Cut with shears, nibbler or snips not abrasive blade.

    Specific questions?

Here is a site with lots of info. Corrugated or 5-v would be tradional but I like SM (the small profile).

Little more info, please.  Standing seam?  Panels?  Other?

One thing that is universal... be sure to wear the mesh gloves to handle, and if you get cut... go get it professionally attended to.  Had a guy get his hand scratched by the stuff... ended up almost loosing his hand do to the infection.  Doc said that he has had many similar cases... all very serious.  Only took two days for the guy to be in BIG trouble with is hand.

Not sure about the details of roof type. The structure is a horse stable, about 800 sq/ft. It's not insulated or even closed up. We aren't sure what type of steel system to use. Any suggestions? What's best value (not necessarily cheapest)?

        Molten,

We build alot of barns and use steel roofing from ABC out of Omaha.  They do have a website but I can't remember it right now.  There are two different weights of steel,  26 ga. and 29 ga.  The 29 is more common, less expensive, and comes in more profiles than the 26.  We do all exposed fastener roofs and sides, standing seam is more $, and seems better suited to homes, not barns.  They carry all standard trims, channels, ridge caps and accessories for the steel to match.

I should also mention that how your roof is framed is going to play into the equation.  rafter/purlin, rafter/sheathing, rafter only.

        Hope this helps.

I can only tell you what I would use if it were mine.

I wouldn't go for an expensive system... not on a horse barn (unless the horse barn were on my million $$ estate!)

Vanguard type system, or maybe a rib-roof type system, would be my choices.  Be sure to follow manufacturer's specs on install... if you try to wing-it... it will probably leak.

Drill the holes for the screws while in the pile , saves all that measuring, messing around.
