Johnnie...you haven't had fun until you've done an 18/12 steel roof, or more common, an old barn roof. Fortunately, most aren't standing seam, but exposed fastener V rib.
Here's what we do; on all exposed fastner roofs, we cut all the panels for one area at once, to get them the same length. Then, we predrill all the holes from the back, that way, all the screws line up. But here's the cool part. We take roof jacks, coat them with three or four layers of duct tape to protect the roof, and then put them on with regular roofing screws (two sets at the roof jacks). We use a tarp over our plank to protect the roof (so it doesn't scratch the ribs), and then work our way up. When the ridge is finished and we're going down, we remove the jacks. We replace ALL the screws that held the jacks, and if the hole is elongated or damaged, we use a large-washer head roofing screw to replace the damaged one. No damage...no danger of leaks.
And, while moving from left to right and installing the panels, we not only set up the jacks on the left, but use a ladder with a specially padded (and secured), ladder hook.
You only need to do it, say ten more times and you'll get the hang of it!
*I've done more steel in the ice of winter than in summer. Used chicken ladders and sometimes tied off too.
*Life is like a chicken ladder........short, and covered with sh*t.
*Was working with a know it all on a steep barn roof putting up shakes.Started to light rain and I said "nope..thats it for me" noticing how slick them ruff shakes got. "Oh you chicken shit go on get down..Im just going to finsh this ridge" Heedless to say 30 sec. I get to watch old Ren sliding down 16' of 8/12, and 12' of 4/12 shed roof before catching himself on the starter strip at the edge of the roof.Well this "chicken shit" watched this ahole pull splinters out of his butt for 2 weeks!
