I am interested in using steel frame windows in a new house to be built of rastra block, and I’m looking for a source. I noticed that they were used in a house described in issue # 162 by David Evans, but they don’t seem common in residential constuction. Are they much higher priced than wood windows or not energy efficient? I like their looks as well as their low maintenance. Any ideas?

I'm sorting through steel-framed doors vs. standard residentials due to problems with kick-ins at low income rental properties. The steel-frames commonly available are commercials in the $1400 price range, each.
Stanley makes a hybrid door with steel frame for around $300 vs. $100 for the same in a stock wood jamb.
Don't know if this helps....

One of our local high end window suppliers occasionally mentions to me that he has a customer ask for a price quote on steel frame windows for residential applications. He has it down to a science, now. He just prices one window out of the 30 that they need and he saves himself the trouble of pricing the other 29. A few of his comments concerning these windows:
They are gorgeous !
If you have to ask me for a price quote, you can't afford them.
I hope I can sell just one job with these someday because then I can retire.
Apparently, the line he carries is ungodly expensive but beautiful.
I am still trying to figure out why anyone would want to have steel windows right on Puget Sound. Salty air, right ?
