Stone veneer – best practices?
Fidalgo Island, Wa
I’m curious. I’ve been watching a spendy remodel overlooking the Quemes Channel. It’s getting about 4′ of stone veneer applied around the base of the home. Original home (several walls of which remain) must have been 70 yrs old. Brick. Dated look. The felt paper was looking good when they tore the brick off.
Their method looks like two layers of felt over the sheathing, then a layer of mortar troweled across that like a scratch coat, then the stone. Don’t see any masonry ties in the troweled section.
What are the best practices for drainage and such. Use a weep screed?
I believe FHB did an article on the rot issues when veneer has no drainage. Dramatic photos.

There has to be some sort of metal mesh holding that mortar to the wall behind the felt. Mortar won't work on felt paper without some solid connection to what lies behind the felt.

@@ There has to be some sort of metal mesh holding that mortar to the wall behind the felt.I found a site that showed them using metal stucco mesh (diamond type) over the paper, which makes a good deal of sense. They also detailed a strip of metal flashing at the base, which I did not see here. I will check for evidence of mesh.
