Hello:
I need to vent a stove hood, but the existing space is limited. Is 6″ round ducting a must, or can 4″ be substituted? In this particular installation, the duct is going up along a brick wall for a foot or two, then turning 90 degrees and continuing for around 5 feet before emptying into a vertical 12″ square duct that goes to the roof.
Also – any suggestions as to what I should be looking for in cubic feet/minute of airflow? The stove has not been picked out yet, but it will be nothing fancy, just 4 gas burners.
Thanks,
Musashi

If my remedial math is close, you are limiting the exhaust immediately to 13 s.i. when it should be at least 22 (the initial exhaust opening of the hood. The area of the 6'' is 28 s.i.
Outside of the fan trying to suck at about 300 cfm's and blow into a straw, the result might be pushing air back out into the room. Also, that much blockage will probably cause alot of turbulence-resulting in one loud #### 'd fan.

A follow-up question: Inside the soffit where I have to run the duct, I have about 4" x 10" of usable space. What is the size of rectangular duct that has the same airflow as 6" round?
Thanks,

The 2-1/4 x 10 (I hope my memory is correct) is the size of the hole on the top/back of the hood or micro / hood combo. That comes usually with a cheap flange that you can fit the 2-1/4 x 10 rect. duct or rect to 6'' round adapter.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

I just looked it up on the Broaun (not spelled correctly?) website, and they said that it was 3 1/4 x 10.
Thanks again for the help. Now I have to get out the sledgehammer and crowbar, and run some duct.
