straightening a cathedral ceiling for drywall
I’ll be putting strapping on a cathedral ceiling to get it ready for drywall. Hang the straps with screws then back them out and add shims to straighten everything out. Are there any tricks to doing this quicker? I’ve got 2, 4, and 6 foot spirit levels but they’re just straight edges since the ceiling is 30 degrees sloped.

Laser line And a gauge block.
String line and a gauge block.
Some sort of neck pain treatment.
I second the strings. You can also run two of them corner to corner, the distance between them at the center of the X will show you how much of a twist there is, if any. Use gauge blocks like Calvin suggests.
I'll "third" the 2 strings, corner to corner in an X with a second pair of strings running the length of the room, at top and bottom of the rafters.
However, I'd suggest different materials and method. Instead of furring strips, to be run perpendicular to the rafters and shimmed at each cross-point, I would install 10' lengths of 2" metal L's (20g), fastened to the side of each rafter. This way, you only need to locate the plane at the ends of the 10' lengths, instead of every 16". Likely your rafters are longer than 10', so alternate start point of each 10' length at each rafter.
Still fasten metal L every 16". Heck, every 12". No shims needed.
