yep the wife ask me to please strip the downstairs bathroom and paint with a faux finish (i dabble w /decent results). used the dif stuff and the popel pocket harpoon and paper tiger thinga ma jig. after 2 hours of waitng and waiting i found me a corner and carefully went to peeling. well the wallpaper came off and the top layer of the sheetrock paper exposing the brown paper layer.
then was wondering before skim coating the whole shootin’ match , should i seal with a 2 coat’s of bulls -eye seal coat shellac, than start my joint compound. but will the seal coat and the spackle not bond. the paper is kinda raggedy needs to be trimmed and keep the mess to a minimum. any diffrent ideas ,procedure’s, marriage counseling advice. i got 911 on speed dial…. thanks very much… bear

papers already down then with no paper on the dw anymore?
I've never tried to skim over an entire wall, at that point I've just replaced the DW, in spots where a little section of paper came off the DW I've used kilz and then skimmed over it.
I've taken down my share of wallpaper, that job just stinks.
the paper tears are spotty. i tossed around maybe putting some plasterweld on them??? over the seal it?? the job of stripping does indeed suck. thanks for your time.....b"expectations are premeditated resentments"
Sounds like that paper was stuck real well. I wonder if they used some watered down Titebond II. I've never had wallpaper pull the drywall paper off to any major degree. Makes me think that the wall wasn't sized when it was applied.
I've always found that pulling the top decorative layer off first and then spraying with a super hot dif solution works best. Let it soak and set then sraper with a wallpaper scraper.
On messy walls like you,ve got I scrub a couple of times with Dif and follow it up with clean water just to make sure I get all of the adhesive off the wall. Then put on a primer/sealer. Usually use a latex from Zissner. I patch and skim with USG Easysand setting compound.
And I'll be damned if my wife doesn't have the lets strip the wallpaper bug right now too. Been bugging me to get started. I wonder if they're in cahoots or something. ;)
Makes me think that the wall wasn't sized when it was applied.
I'd bet dollars to donuts it wasn't, I've never had a problem with a sized wall.
I've never noticed a difference btw hot water and cold mixed with the dif. The one thing I've noticed watching others do it, is they often do not let the Dif work long enough before they try to start taking it off.
Have you ever used the Dif gel? I noticed it on the self the other day, looks a lot like windex in color
Getting the top layer off first is the key, I don't use the "paper tiger" too much damage to the walls and I've never seen a difference.
The best scraper I've found is a cheap plastic drywall knife with the corners sanded over, it will not gouge unless you really try.
By hot I meant very hot water as well as a little higher concentration of the Dif than the product label recommends. It's probably overkill but I've always used that method after it was told to me by the wallpaper lady that had worked at Diamond Vogel for 327 years. I thought is was wise to heed her arcane knowledge of wallpaper. ;)
I did use the Dif gel once. Didn't particularly care for it as it made an even bigger gooey mess than the usual gooey mess.
I agree with you 110% on getting that first layer off first and letting the Dif do it's thing. After a while you sort get a feel for when it's time to start scraping.
Those wallpaper stripper/scrapers do really have a tendency to gouge walls. I still like them the best but will sort of fine tune the blade but tweaking up the corners against a piece of scrap wood. Then keep the blade at a very low angle when scraping.
And have I ever told you I hate stripping wallpaper even worse than tearing out plaster and lathe. But it is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation. - Herman Melville
I'd rather take down pop-corn then wall paper...
the crusty nasty sluge that gets on your hands is a PITA to get off and makes your hands feel like they are in a cast.
To keep the mess to a min. I use a one gallon pale and as soon as I stip the wallpaper from the wall it goes into the bucket, another neat trick I've learned, if you start at the bottom and work your way up making verticale stips in the wall up to about a 1' off the cieling the wall paper will just hang there until you go clear across the room, then go horizontal and cut the strips off, saves most of the mess until you're just about done. my explanation isn't very good so that might be clear as mud
I usually double the recommended amount of dif/volume of water, might be overkill, but I don't think so.
Stripping wallpaper made more sense back in the days of lath and plaster when you had for sure a good hard surface under it. If it's on gyp board of any kind and the job goes sour, it may be more cost effective to demo back to the studs.

Why the heck do wifes pester husbands to strip paper? Pester us to build a new room or remodel the bathroom, ok. But strip wallpaper?
"Honey . . . get off your pretty pittie hiney and here is a mist sprayer and puddy knife. I will see how you are doing after the game is over. And can you bring me a beer before you get started?"
Then of course I will help out and help hang.
If I was (were) King of the world one, new law would be to ban wallpaper.
Road signs would go too.
Hey Bear - save you a headache. Once you're happy that the wall is as cleaned up as its gonna get, go to Sherwin and get a gallon of Drywall Conditioner. If you don't like uncle Sherwin, go somewhere else. Draw Tite is another name. Coat the wall. All those little fuzzies get stuck down. I like the SW product b/c its waterborne, it foams up a little when you roll it on, and when the foam sucks itself into the wall, all those little strands of junk suck down with it and are glued in place. That will "prime" so to speak, the torn drywall. Then you can skim away.
