Structural Support for 3 ft. add on
Question: I am doing a one story bumb out to a kitchen, adding three feet to a two story structure. It is conventional 2×4 construction. I’m planning to build a post and deck three feet out and add walls to enclose the area. The current exterior wall, which will be removed, supports the floor joists overhead. When I remove the outside wall can I extend the floor joists overhead by three feet? The length or wall being bumped out is 18 feet. I do not want to replace the existing wall with post and beams because it would break up the ‘new’ ceiling line.
Also, to complicate matters, the second story is overhung about two feet. This is a typical colonial style house.

Sonny, I cringe everytime I hear the word "bump out". You need a qualified on-site evaluation by an engineer. Course someone might attempt an answer here.............but I kind of doubt it.

Calvin is right - Someone needs to be there to evaluate the structure and see what it needs. We can't do that from here.
