I’m doing a stucco job (conventional 3 coat) and have read lots about puting two layers of tar paper or similar under the stucco. Specifically tyvek stucco wrap, 15# felt, self furring wire lath and then the 3 coats of stucco. My stucco contractor says the two layers of paper are not necessary as do most people I’ve spoken with. The literature, Journal of Light Construction, I’m referencing has some compelling articles from stucco guys who are called in to fix bad stucco jobs. They all say 2 layers is best. Questions: Does anyone have experience here? And, is there a downside to two layers?
Comments greatly appreciated.

No, I don't have any specific experience with stucco, good or bad. But let me think for a minute about your question.
Let me see......$100 for a second layer of felt, and a few hours to hang it, and for that I get to know that I did the best I could -- and I get to know it for the rest of my life.
Or, I could save the money, and worry.
Hmmmm............
I agree, the cost is minimal. I called the stucco mfg and they said don't do it!
Well, like I said, I'm no expert.
But I fail to see how it could hurt, so long as it is properly applied. Felt lays flat to the sheathing, and does not rob the stucco of any thickness.
Did the manufacturer state that it would cause a problem? Or were they simply saying that it was a waste of time/money? If the former, then I'd listen to them. If the latter, then you gotta go with your own gut feeling.
Vast projects should not be founded on half vast ideas.
