I have approx. 250 sqft of stucco ceiling that I want to be NOT stucco. I could remove the stucco by scraping, etc., or strap and re-drywall, but I heard of a 3rd technique in which 2 or 3 skim coats are applied over the stucco and sanded. I can’t find anyone local who has heard of the technique and all were skeptical that it would work. Has anyone has had success or problems with this method? Thanks. …Hal

My drywall finish maestro has done it once for me on a master bath redo. He applied several thin coats of set-type (two fast ones one afternoon, then a 45-minute coat the next day), never did do any sanding. I just painted with a 1/2" nap roller (prime + 2 color) and the ceiling looked and stayed beautiful.
He said the trick was to stiff brush off any loose pebbles first so they didn't roll up in your new coat
