Could anyone help me out with some exterior stucco info please. I’ve got 3 walls to stucco, budget-job but nice.
I acquired a number of left-over sheets of diamond mesh from a job-site.. Is the mesh a better option than something along the lines of chicken wire for a substrate? Would galvy roofing nails suffice to attach it to wood frame wall?
Also, I’m tempted to just whup up sand, portland and lime instead of off-the-shelf stucco pre-mix. Might be cheaper. Pros/cons?
steel trowel finish or wood float? Pros/cons?

Whats under the stucco?
When they do stucco over block they only use corner bead on the edges and paint link on the block
I don't know a lot about stucco over wood but I see the diamond mesh with felt on the back used when I see it.
I would buy stucco mix. If you are not doing a whole lot of it I doubt there is much money to be saved getting a yard of sand delivered. I think they also put other additives in most stucco mix.
The current favorite finish around here in "knockdown" but when I had them do the interior walls of my addition I got a smooth hard trowled finish so it looks like drywall. It takes a pretty good guy to make that look right. That is why they like textures.
The only problem with a texture is you almost have to get the same guy back if you really want to match it. Everyone seems to have a little different technique, enough that you can see where one guy stopped and another guy started.
Thank you!
Sounds like you got a sweet start on a little savings w/ the mesh. I'd think it would be great and add just a bit of longevity to the job.
I know little to nothing about the stucco DIY approach suggested.
Yea, the mesh was under a snowbank and it looked as if the front-end loader drove over it a time or two. Come spring nobody wanted it, so, heck yea, I took it. 6-7 bucks a sheet at Depot!
Mesh is fine
Typically there is some felt under neath to minimize how much get behind the mesh.
I've never seen it done by hand. In Vegas, virtually all residential exterior is stuccoed. They use gunite guns, and a knock down finish. Seen tons of that.
