Looking for sources of information on applying stucco over rigid insulation. In other words, how do they do that?.
I have a small section of new standard exterior stud-wall (20’x8′) that is to be given stucco. It would be really nice to fatten the wall and add some R-value by placing 2″ rigid insulation over the sheating first. Seems simple, but this happens to be out of my experience and I can’t seem to find a source for the solution. What are the preferred fasteners? How does the wire hold up when its held two inches out from the sheating like that? What is the preferred board in this situation? Can I accidently trap moisture in the walls?….etc.
It seemed like a simple idea at first and I could just can the idea, but now I can’t stop until I find the answers! Any good books, sites or front porches to recommend?

You're looking for Dri-Vit.
*Man, Look at all these new messages!!BTW ;)
*Now how the h*ll did that get over here?
*Thanks, but in this instance we want to use the old fashioned stuff: 3-coat stucco.
*i need a recipe for old time 3coat stucco.
*Teo,I've talked with several engineers about a similar situation. They all suggested using styrofoam sheet material and going over it with traditional or synthetic stucco. The styrofoam has the added advantage that it can be cut and glued in decorative patterns easily and cheaply and then gone over with stucco.Houses built with ICF's (insulated concrete forms) often have stucco applied directly to the esterior of the styrofoam forms with no problems.Good luck,Cliff.
*b WBA At Your ServiceThe foam is attached with washer head fasteners. I would strongly recommend that you check with a local EIFS supplier and use one of their recommended methods of dealing with water infiltration. Many of the products used in EIFS could easily be used with stucco such as water barriers, flashings and weephole systems.
