stupid question time again.- soffits
i need to build an interior soffit(?) in the kitchen to cove a 2 inch pipe. Thinking about 2×4 fastern flat and then cover with 3/4 plywood that I have to get the drywall clearance. or do I rip the 2x down?
I been putting it off due to I was going build a upper cabinet with fake back. scratch that plan
( this is old picture but you can see the pipe at top of wall)

If all you have to cover is that one piece of vertical pipe I would just cut the back out of my cabinet. Easy enough to box around inside the cabinet.

that is what I was planning on doing but DW decided that there will be no upper cabinets.
Did you explain that this will be
a change order and will cost extra?
If there are no uppers as the wife wants then do as Dino suggested, I'd opt for the 2 X 2.

Happy Birthday! Not possible to reroute the pipe?
thats the outside wall at the gable. there is a concrete wall with a truss sitting on top. that pipe is the vent for the kitchen sink. its one of those "oh, $@#%" that you dont see till you do it.
Coffered Ceiling. You're up to the task.
Hmmm, chance to be creative. How about running a wire to that location? Build a box to encase the pipe and mount a light on it, balance it with one on the other side of the window.
They can't get your Goat if you don't tell them where it is hidden.
You gonna run this 'soffit' the whole length of that wall-ceiling corner so it looks like it's there on purpose?
Save yourself lotsa time and trouble; frame it like you said with flat 2x (or rip 2x4 down to 2x2's and double your stock), but don't gyprock it. Get some 5/16 x 3½ pine beadboard or vee-joint or whatever you fancy, and nail that on right over the frame, horizontal or vertical as looks best. No corner joints to tape and mud; just nail on 9/16" cove moulding. Pre-stain the stuff to match the rest of the woodwork.
Done.
