Dear Sir
Could you please answer a question for me?
I am going to install a laminate floor in my flat
and I wonder if it is possible to remove the
existing carpet but leave the existing underlay
and to fit the laminate on to the underlay
giving better sound proofing?

Jamie,
By laminate floor, do you mean Pergo-like or hardwood veneer bonded to a plywood or chipboard substrate? And do you mean by underlay the foam or rubber padding or do you mean the actual plywood or equivalent underlayment fastened to the subfloor? If you mean the padding under the carpet, it has to go whatever you do. You will need to use whatever the manufacturer of the new flooring recomends. If you mean the existing underlayment, you could leave that. Hope this helps.
