I have a basement family room that didn’t suit my tastes. Was paneled with cheap paneling and hooooooooooooorrible pink trim. Poor drywall seams in the ceiling and just genreally not my style. SO, i took down the paneling. Behing the paneling is drywall. Cool. Except, the paneling was nailed and GLUED to the drywall. I understand why they glued also, but I still haven’t figured out why they bothered to drywall before putting up the paneling.
Anyway, on to my question, I have removed all trim and paneling. And since the paneling was glued, I have glue residue on the drywall. Can’t get it off without tearing the paper, destroying the drywall. I’ve thought about several options:
1) Remove the existing drywall and put up new. Expensive and laborious. But I think since I’m an ameteur drywall finisher, this may give my best chance of getting a decent looking finished wall.
2) Thin drywall (1/8″ ?) over the exisiting stuff (5/8″) and then tape and finish joints. This will cause a little trouble around electrical boxes, etc, but I think those details can be dealt with.
3) Skim coat the entire wall and sand sand sand. Not my first choice, but may have some advantages that I am not seeing.
4) A knockdown finish on the walls. Would look pretty good, and I’m going for a rustic/lodge look anyway, so this might be ok. And again, I’m no drywall pro, so this might make it easier for me to get an acceptable finished wall since it won’t be a smooth surface.
But there are some sections where the knockdown is not an option (wife wants wallpaper). So I still need to finish some of the wall surfaces so that they will accept paper. Thought about hanging drywall and calling in someone to finish. But I kinda want to do it myself. Because, well, that’s just the way I am. And after all, if I never do it, I’ll never learn.
Anyone care to share thoughts, ideas, etc ? Just looking for input. Thank s.
