We have just finished new construction on a house in Northern California
and need serious sun control on several large trapezoid windows. Obviously
vertical blinds would work but the stacking configuration of these when
closed is not architecturally desirable. We have also heard some horror
stories about glazing damage after installation of films, although some
recent warranties against this seem pretty good. Any advice form those who
have had experience with films would be appreciated. Are any other options
available out there?
Thanks

a trap , like most glazing ,has some minor nicks in the edge, when the insulated unit is made up and glazed, every thing is hunky-dory... then the film guys come in and apply this new surface tension to the unit.. it can add just enough addtional stress to the edges to run one of teh nicks, and the unit explodes if it's safety, or runs if its regular..
the glazing mfr. warrantied the unit when it left the factory and had a pretty good idea of what stresses it could withstand... the application of the film wasn't part of the deal..
the films are excellent at doing what they are designed to do... the additional stress is just one of the downsides to be factored in... be prepared to replace some of the units..
or ask the film installer how they handle the problem..i think the price of a good company includes a warranty allowance just for this eventuality...
*Several years ago a friend approached me with the same question. How about this:Pick out a fabric that tends to be color-stable in bright sun. Have it sewn into a shade the dimensions of the trap. window's light. Mount the roller at the sill. Rig a small pulley at the apex, lead a cord from the point directly below it on the shade's leading edge up through it and down to a jam block or cleat. This allows the shade to be pulled up and held in place. To close the shade, give a quick tug and the spring retracts. Take the slack out of the cord at the cleat and that's it, light control for a trap.
