Hi,I am planning on building a sun/screen room this spring. I have plans that are for a 12×12 room using 2×6 for the roof rafters but I am planning a 12×16 room, will 2×6 rafter still work? The ridge will run prependicular to the 16′ span.

Will your ridge run parallel with the 16' dimension or perpendicular to the 16' dimension? I'm sorry if it sounds like a stupid question, but it needs to be answered before anyone can help you out.
Even with that information the answer may still depend on local factors such as snow load.
Personally, 2 x 6 sounds a bit skimpy to me....even if they're only running out to a 12' wall. Obviously it depends upon the actual run of the rafter, but I don't think I'd attempt it using the 16' dimension. 2 x 8 would be absolute minimal....but I'm in an area that gets snow regularly.
I'd check with an engineer first.

See I was thinking the rafter would only be spanning 6' or 8'. Half of 12' or 16'. In that case I think 2x6 is ok in a good deal of situations. Now a shed roof spanning either 12' or 16' is a whole 'nother story.
Me thinks we need more information.View Image
I actually tried responding to your first post. For some reason, the forum wasn't allowing it.
All seems well now.
I agree.....ya might get away with it for 6' run.....we needs more info.
