I need to replace 4, almost rusted through, support posts in my basement. When i go to do this do i need to cut open the floor and pour in a new footing for each or is it ok to set and bolt the post to the concrete floor? I was planning on installing them next to the existing ones and then removing the old posts.
Also is it ok to use jacks instead of a new construction post. I have seen these used in other basements but was not sure if it was the right thing to do.

Yes, you have to have them set on footers, but, if you're sure there were already footers under the concrete floor, then it's fine to just replace and set them back in their original positions. The footers we usually pour for these are 36x36x15" Deep.
I assume by jacks, you mean jack posts and if so, that is fine. We even use them in new construction. But when we weld to the steel beam, we also weld the threads of the jack post so it becomes permanent. Hope this helps.

*To replace the new posts where the current ones reside will mean that you have to brace along side of the current post, then remove it, then put the new one in it's place.Whay are your posts so rusty now? Seems like another problem to address.Pete
