My client wants a 28′ long shed dormer built onto the back side of her
10/12 pitch cape code. She wants the entire interior of that new space to
be open and unabstructed. The question is: how to support the existing
main ridge with the addition of the shed dormer roof? Obviously one could
replace the main ridge with a structural beam in transfer the load to the
existing gable end walls, but is there a simpler way that I am missing?
Finally, if interior load bearing walls or posts are necessary, what if
they do not line up with bearing walls on the floor b

Steve-
Your problem begs for an engineered solution. You need someone on sight taking measurements, calculating loads and offering solutions. Don't try to fly this on your own. A mistake here and you'll be working for someone else for free for a few years. Tell your client up front you need an engineer to help determine how to do the job and they need to pay for it. You may lose the job but you won't lose your ass...
*Steve K, I fully agree with Doug, and it appears you're aware of the structural problems that arise when undertaking a project such as your client desires. If you want additional information or need something to show your client when you explain the need for a stamped engineered solution, check out the August '93 issue of JLC (or find a friend with the CD).Good luck, Steve T.
*Matt,The attatchment didn't work. Try again ??Or just e-mail it to me and I'll put it up for you.View Image
