Suspended ceiling against ribbed wall
Next week I’m putting a suspended ceiling in part of the customers new pole barn. The exterior walls have ribbed steel on the interior. The pic shows the walls. The ribs extend out from the wall one inch.
If I just put the wall angle against the wall, then there is a one inch gap between the ribs (and the wall angle is only touching the wall every twelve inches).
Anyone have a good method around this?
So far the best I’ve come up with is to drill two inch holes twelve inches on center down the middle of a 2×4, rip it in half and attach it to the wall so it would be flush with the wall angle.
My biggest complaint with that is the ribs are not half rounds and would not fill the drilled half circle. Maybe a bit wide of a gap to caulk.
There’s sixty feet of wall to deal with…

Being a T- bar guy for over 15 years why not just attached to the ribs every 12" I realize you would have a void between the ribs but there is not a whole lot you can do without furring out the wall.

Just tack it to the ribs, and goob in lots of GreatStuff in the gaps - maybe a couple of applications. It will be cool and sorta' cave-like with all the stalactites hangin' down.

Find out where the steel came from.
Get a box or two of closure strips. It is a foam strip profiled to fit the panel ribs. Most are designed to fit under the panels, so they ar the opposite of the profile you need, but the manufacturer may have some of what you need. It ussually has a paper peel away strip over a pressure sensative adhesive.
Peel and stick the closure strip on the back of the wall mold. Then install as ussual.
If they don't have a foam closure strip fpr the surface profile ask is they have any metal trim that matches the profile.
what Dave said, they have what u need made out of foam with sticky back.
Another thought just popped in my head.
Get a can or two of siding touch up paint. If it is in spray can, get a case and paint the under side of the closure strip. If not get enough white spray paint tp match the wall mold and make the strip look like part of the ceiling system.
Why does a barn have a suspended ceiling? Just wondering.

It's a 30' x 60' metal pole barn. We've put a partition wall in to divide it into a 15' x 30' music studio and a 45' x 30' shop.The suspended ceiling is going into the studio room.

A music studio with no wall or ceiling insulation?
Who said there was no insulation??The exterior walls were insulated by the builder (Morton, fiberglass) and the partition wall will also be insulated with fiberglass that was left over from the partition (the shop will be heated full time due to plumbing, the studio will have it's own heating/ac unit). The ceiling will have insulation blown in on top of the steel ceiling by the builder. The owner had an acoustic(?) company design the placement of acoustical materials on the walls.

Those who sell the metal siding will have exactly what you need the foam strips they usually go under the cap or flashing and they fit the profile of the steel. You could paint them before hand and they'll seal up the gaps nicely, although they squish a little where they go over the ribs but I don't think it will look too bad
Then you can run long screws to fasten the celing track through the ribs hopefully into something solid behind them. I would bet that's your best looking option.
They also make flashing that has the profile of the steel I guess you could lay that on first then fasten your track through that, I'm guessing it would look like a square crown kind of, I think that would cost quite a bit more thoughView Image
Sorry, couldn't tell what the detail was from the photograph. So the metal walls in the photos are metal partition walls, and not exterior walls? Is this a metal building inside another building? How is the ceiling insulated? I'm lost
Sorry. It is a metal pole barn. The four exterior walls were built by Morton and are covered in steel inside and out with fiberglass insulation. The interior ceiling is steel and will have blown in insulation on top of it.I built the partition wall which will have drywall on the studio side and OSB on the shop side with fiberglass insulation in between. The studio will get a suspended ceiling below the steel ceiling for acoustical considerations. In the exterior pic, the studio is on the left end with the partition wall just to the left of the second door. The interior shot is from what will be the shop looking through the studs into the studio.

So, all the girders and purlins are covered with steel on both the inside and the exterior of the building? Wow, I've never seen a building like that before, interesting.
It's a big outfit. They did a pretty good job on this building.http://www.mortonbuildings.com/

I out checked the web site. You can request product information and it looks like you can e-mail questions.
The Morton building around here are ussually errected by a franchised builder. Your client can likely put you in contact with the builder, and he may be able to get you the closer strip or profile trim you need.
Heck, just call the 800 number and talk to them direct.
This isn't thier first rodeo,... they have seen this done before,... have the solution setting on a shelf for you.
My customer did talk to the Morton rep who has been very knowledgeable and helpful all along. The rep said he thought he might have some foam that would work...he would check... and drop it off if he had any. None has appeared.Customer has decided that I should go ahead and put up the suspended ceiling and we'll worry about the gaps later (probably by stuffing foam in them...).
