Anyone ever swapped one?
I’ve got a small window A/C unit who’s fan is on the way out. The compressor runs fine.
It’s a squirrel-cage fan with (I suspect) a small C-frame motor. The fan sits behind the condensor so isn’t exposed for easy removal, but I haven’t completely opened things up for inspection. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

If you can get it open, get to it, and find a suitable replacement it should be a no-brainer. Several ifs there, though.
How small? The 5 to 10k units are so cheap I doubt you'd save any money over buying a new unit when you factor in driving time and installation. Those little A/C's are really throw-aways.

Yeah, I wondered the same. I forget the exact size, but it's pretty small.
I found the receipt and saw that I paid $289 about ten years ago, so it doesn't owe me anything. But if I could replace the motor for fifty bucks or less I'd take a crack at fixing it.
Follow up note to florida and everyone else:
So it looks like A/C prices for these small units have dropped significantly. Like I said, I paid $289 ten years ago. A 5K BTU unit goes for approx. $100 now.
A replacement fan motor for the old one is $106.
So there's my answer.
Thanks all.
So you're gonna buy the new unit, swap out the fan, and throw the rest away?
Sure.... always up for a challenge. ;-)
BTW, about the run capacitor for the heat pump, it sure feels great when you can diagnose, find parts, and repair something yourself (with help from the BT friends, of course!). The house (and family) are comfortable, while a heat wave rages outside.
Thanks,
Scott.
