Thanks Stan, one of these days I'm going to do a swoop mitre. They've intrigued me but I find myself forgetting their possibilities. Simple I'm sure but could you explain your making of both the tread and return jigs which lead to a good fit?
thanks.

Calvin: You would not believe how simple it is to make the mirror image jigs. I just use a narrow jigsaw blade and run it along a straight edge for the straight part of the jig. I then just freehand the cut along a 3.5 inch radius line and this automatically makes a nice mirror image jig. One does the return...the other the tread.
Stan
Well, don't that take the cake.
thanks.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

Stan, I understand how to cut/make that first template you show, but could you explain a little more how you cut the mirrored template (the one you don't show)so that it's a perfect match. Sure would appreciate it as I run into this problem (making mirrored templates) once n awhile.
Joe, as I understand it.........the drop of the tread template becomes the return template. One cut, both sides.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

ah ha, and you cut them both with a fine tooth jigsaw blade .. I guess if your cut wasn't a perfect swoop, it wouldn't matter because both sides would fit together.
thanks to stan , i made a swoop miter for a wall cap oak rail.... worked great

Mike: Glad to have helped a little. I get so much off this forum...it feels good to give back. <G>
I have on several occasions just traced whatever outline I want to follow....and a thin jigsaw blade will make perfect mirror image router templates to whatever you want to trace.

Stan, I must call your hand! What you call swoop miters, on treads are actually the blades for the gyro in the background! I bet you will try to write it off as a business expense! Great job!! What is this carpenter/pilot, thing? Best wishes, Chuck :)

Chuck: There are two things in my life other than family that I am passionate about.....curved stairbuilding and building/flying gyrocopters.
Both are a climbing business with lots of turns.

Stan, It was this web site that got interested in gyros. I am pilot/woodworker. Comm, multi engine, land, sea, inst. Ive flown a lot of different acft. but never a gyro. Are you, by chance, located in New England? ChuckIf, at first, you fricascee, fry, fry a hen!
Chuck: I am in central Illinois....100 miles south of Chicago.
Stan
s they say in Maine, can't get there from here! But I bet your one of the Oshcosh, crowd! That's a good thing and when you talk of your priorities, they ARE in order. Best wishes, Chuck KellerIf, at first, you fricascee, fry, fry a hen!
Ok Stan ..

You think you could stand the slow pace of central Ill over the bustling city life that Pitt has to offer! Suppose its not that far to Chicago so you could get your big city fix if'n you needed.

lol.
and Chicago ain't what she sued to be either.
maybe 5 years ago ... friend moved to ChiTown.
wife was thrilled to make a trip back to her old stomping ground ... she lived there for a coupla airline career months many years back ... told me how much I'd love Rush Street .... bar after bar .... the city's big part street.
Seems we missed the action by 10 years.
all fancy dress and hat shops ... a coupla high end coffee shops thrown in.
we did manage to find the last of the 2 hold out bars ... had a good time there ...
but just wasn't what she remembered or what I was expecting.
maybe I'd better stay here in Pittsburgh?
at least till the liver fails?
