Anybody used this trim product? 5/8 x 11 1/4 x 18′ Need to apply to an inner radius of 5′ and outer radius of 6′. Will it bend easily and smoothly to conform to the framing? Will I need a substrate over the framing such as bending ply to achieve a smoother look? Huh? |

Thier web site http://www.synboard.com/dl.asp make it sound like the greatest thing since sliced bread.
No experience with it, but you get free bump
Yeah, I searched the web site as best I could, but could find only a vague reference to bending, no statements about the practical radius.

If its like Azek, it'll bend like a wet noodle when yer trying to get it on your roof rack or a fascia.
Take it in the shop and use a jig? Breaks everytime. It has a mind of its own.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

How does it do with some mild heat applied?
Define "mild" ..I used it for glass stops on them windows I did. About a 18" radius. If over heated it shrinks, if modrate heat it gets longer.
All in all it does respond but the range of temp. is pretty narrow.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Nice to know.
A month or so ago someone posted a ? about it, and I think none of us had heard of it, but IIRC it resembles Azec in property.
Maybe spin the search wheel?

I haven't used this product, but I have used others. The most recent was some PVC trim/flat stock that I bought from home depot.
I bent it in a piece of 10"x8' rigid vent pipe. the heat source was a 8' electic wall board heater that I wired to a 220 cord that was connected directly into a circuit breaker on the main panel. the heater just layed on the bottom of the pipe with the heater facing up. A towel was use to cover the ends.
i used a piece of diamond lathing mesh to support the trim board. In about 7 minutes, the trim was like a limp noodle...
You can easily bend 4"-6" flat stock. Just a little melting on the back if your not careful. I few test pieces and you'll overcome this problem
I have also used some of Home depot pvc trim moldings to bend around openings. The 1 1/4"x 1 3/4" brick mold bends nicely. The styrene type products don't work.
Here's the answer I got from Synboard
from Bill Mathews - [email protected]
Good afternoon Ralph,
SYNBOARD is bendable. However, in order to achieve the best results you
need to apply heat. A standard heat gun such as the type used in auto body
shops will work. You do not want to concentrate the heat but spread it over
a broad area working from one end to the other preferably over a form of
some type. Once bent and cooled for ten to fifteen minutes, the product will
maintain the new shape.
Stainless steel screws will work very well. Even though it is a fairly
broad radius, bending without heat would cause problems.
Millwork facilities use long ovens to bend the product in all sorts of
configurations including ovals and full circles. We have a number of
customers who have great success field bending with heats guns.
Unfortunately, there is no manual to cover that process.
I hope this helps.
