I have a chimney that is framed with 2×4’s with plywood sheathing and then was covered with synthetic stucco. The stucco has appeared to have cracked in some spots and shows signs of some effervescence around the cracked areas. I can see inside the chimney area from inside the attic and see no signs of water damage to the plywood sheathing. I am planning on replacing the stucco with the hardi-plank cement type boards. My question is do I need to remove all the stucco or just place the hardi-plank boards over the top of the stucco? I

Remove the stucco. You will find it comes off fairly easily. Don't know about the efflorescence, but do a google or hotbot search on 'EIF class action' is you want to know more about synthetic stucco than you wanted to know.
