I am preparing to lay a new T &G strip floor in 3/4 random width Southern Yellow Pine in an existing home built 20 years ago with OSB sub floor. A contractor I spoke with stated that I may experience floor squeaks caused by the OSB not retaining the nails. Anybody have any input/suggestions ?. |
Thank’s

You nail over the joist long enough to penetrate beyond the subflooring.
Don't nail a solid wood floor over OSB. Most floors guys would not do it. Pull it up now or you'll never be happy with the results.
Hey MGMaxwell,
Is this an Urban Legend, or what?
I have 3/4 white oak, 2-1/4 strip flooring installed over 3/4 t&g OSB for 12 years now and no problems. Maybe I'm just lucky!
When, in your experience should I expect failure?
This sounds alot like the "Don't use 1/4 inch Luan for under-layment". I've pulled up enough Luan to know stuff sticks real good to it.
Just curious what your experience has been, mine has been different.

Is your 3/4 t&g advantech? Advantech isn't really the same as osb- it makes great underlayment. OSB on floors makes me nervous.
Did they have advantech 12 years ago?
Good question.
Hey Mike,
No it was just plain old OSB, about $9.00 a sheet at the time. Ply ,I think was about $16.00, needed about 100 sheets, money dictated OSB,always wondered if I'd regret trying to save $700.00 on a $200,000.00 project.

There was a short article several years ago about Hardwood flooring installation over osb, ply, and 1x in FHB. A a study done at VA. Tech showed using osb was not a problem..........done it many, many times.....never a problem.
thanks for the info, good to know.

OSB subfloors are the norm in this area, although Advantech in uppper level homes. Have layed many h/w floors over OSB and had no problems at all.
