Does any one have a recipe for making home made tac-cloths. They are expensive to buy and throw away in quantity. I seem to use a lot on even small jobs, and I have a big project under way now. I sometimes just rinse a good rag in thinner and wring it out good, but it does not pick up dust like a real tac-cloth.
Thanks in advance,
John

You might try asking this in the Knots Finishing forum. I have read that they can be made using old rags, boat varnish and plastic bags, but have never tried it.
Thanks Jim.
The response over at Knots Finishing forum was overwelming. I had ten replys. Boiled linseed oil and thinner is the recipe I was looking for. I also got a lot of advice to not use anything other then air and a dust cloth , depending on what finish I am spraying. I will stick with the air and cloth for spraying white gloss lacquer on kitchen cabinets, and I will go with the tack cloth when finishing the hardwood floors.
Thanks again,
John

Thanks for putting me straight. I thought I was at Knots while all the time I was on a different sight "Woodweb." You know how us internet rookies are ... can't take us anyplace.
that's a great recipe.. but beware.. linseed oil rags are extremely prone to spontaneous combustion.. watch your storageMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore

I looked over at Knots, but didn't find the thread. What's the title of it? I even tried using the advanced search thingy and couldn't come up with it. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.[Arthur C. Clarke]
It's not in knots, it's in woodweb.com

O.K. - I get it now. I'm a little slow, but I catch on eventually...............(-:Sometimes you get the elevator, sometimes you get the shaft.
I'll agree that the boiled liseed oil and thinner will work just fine, and that a dust rag and an air hose are about as effective -- but note that this does not make a true tack rag.
A real tack rag -- one that is sticky to the touch -- is made with rosin. The kind of rosin that violinists use on their bow. Get some at a music store. Soak the rosin in some turpentine to disolve it, then soak a few rags in that. The result will be the stickiest mess you've encountered in a while.
