I can't help you, so I'll give you a bump to get your question put further up toward the top where others can see it.
Never used one, 'cause I got a banjo for only a few bucks at a close-out of a local store. But, my recollection is that you get a plastic pail and cut a horizontal slot about 1/8" by2" near the bottom, feed the tape down through the pail and out the slot, then fill 'er up with compound. Tape pulled out of the slot will be pre-pasted. Vary the width of the slot to adjust the amount of mud that ends up on the tape.
Tauntons Building tips and techniques (for pros by pros series) shows one. 2 slits cut in the bottom of a 1 gal plastic bucket opposite each other. The bucket is fastened to a 2x6 with a 2x4 and dowell upright to hold the roll of tape.
