I am curious if anyone here does their own taxes and what software programs they are using. I relocated last year, and either have to find a new accountant or do it myself.
I realize I may be money ahead to pay someone else to do it (I’ve learned this lesson before) but I am seriously considering giving it a go just for the educational rewards.
Thanks in advance, you guys are great, if there is a better forum on the web I would like to know about that as well.

Depends on your level of complexity. I used Tax Cut once but a long time ago, now use Turbo Tax and have for about last 8 or so years. I just use the Deluxe version but if you have a complex business the Premier version might be worth it.
It seems like every year they change it to make it easier. I think it is worth every penny ( and I have a degree in accounting).
thanks i have heard something about a free trial of turbotax online as well, so there you go.
couldn't help but notice you are in NC also but the western part. i am in the very southeast part, near southport/oak island. we also have a similar quote......
i saw a memo pad that said ....if you meet Mr. Right make sure his first name isn't always.....
1 more question, do you know if it is compatible with quickbooks? i am also just in the process of learning quickbooks, just upgrading from the shoe box
I used TurboTax for a couple of years, then use taxCut one year, and went back to Turbo. Yes, it is compatible with Quickbooks, and there's even a cross-sell ad included on the cd, no extra charge. I buy the cheapo version. It has all the same forms, but a little less help.

i use taxact-online. You dont have to buy the software, just use it on line. taxact-online.com. 2+3=7
The two popular ones here are Tax-Wiz and Quick-Tax (both now from Intuit). I believe both have US versions (??). The Quick-Tax versions for proprietorships and corporations are outstanding, even if you don't use Quick-Books. For family use, Tax-wiz is fast and easy: I prefer it (although it's not very well known outside of professional circles).I file our taxes online, my father did his by phone: can you do that in the US too ?.

There are a whole bunch of BT'ers from NC. Fast Eddie answered your question before I had a chance. I have been very happy with it and it is easy to make changes if you find something you overlooked and need to increase some deduction for an expense you overlooked.
I was born in Raleigh while Dad was at N.C. State, moved to Black Mountain when I was two. I am in Old Fort, about 25 east of Asheville, exit 73 on I-40. Moved back here in 97 after 10 yrs in Kansas that followed twenty in the Army. Never thought I would come back home.
