i have been remodeling and doing custom woodwork for 20 years. recently my lumberyard had a sale on ipe. can anyone tell me the difference between ipe and teak. i say they are the same wood. who is right?

Teak - real teak - is the species Tectona grandis, and is native to Southeast Asia. Ipe is a group of species in the genus Tabebuia, native to South America. Ipe generally runs $6-8/BF. Teak is three to four times that.
As for the woods themselves - they're similar but different. Both are rot and insect resistant. Both age well. Ipe is much, much harder and heavier - about 3x as hard and half again as dense.
