Got this email just now from another contractor friend:
For your information.
I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service technician who was conducting a test on telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9), zero (0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables him/her to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number. I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many local jails/prisons. I have also verified this information with UCB Telecom, Pacific Bell, MCI, Bell Atlantic and GTE.
Please beware. DO NOT press 9, 0, # for ANYONE. The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW. If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you are connected with, I encourage you to pass on this information to them, too. After checking with Verizon they said it was true, so do not dial (9), zero (0), the pound sign # and hang up, for anyone.
PLEASE pass this on to everyone YOU know AND CARE ABOUT!

I got this e-mail a few months ago. It's been floating around for a while.
*It isn't entirely a hoax, but there's a fair amount of information left out. Here's a site that explains it pretty well: http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/weekly/aa021898.htmDave
*I love that site Dave. Any time you get one of these e-mail virus scams, phone scams, whatever, check it out at urbanlegends first.
*Dave, thanks for the web site.
*You're welcome, Sonny.Defusing these internet legends is a hobby of mine. Another good site for this is http://www.truthorfiction.com . Interesting in that they list some of the true ones also.Dave
*Dave - What kind of responses have you gotten from people when you've told them the stuff they sent along was B.S. ?I sort of made this a "hobby", but gave it up. People would get all kinds of pised off when I replied to their emails (politely) telling them what they forwarded to 50 people wasn't true. Only about half the people actually said they appreciated the effort. I still have a few people who will send me one of these bogus emails before they spread them around. But I just ignore most of them.
*Pretty much same as your, Ron. Funniest one lately was from my Dad regarding the false "Klingelman Virus", which has been around forever but now is resurrected for terrorist purposes. So, Dad sends me this dumb thing. I send it back, not only with a reference link to truthorfiction.com, but also with a link to the Centers for Disease Control saying it ain't so. Two days later I see that my wife has one, this time from Mom instead of Dad.I think I've been thanked once... ;-) I got started with this hobby from computer virus hoaxes, just expanded from there. If nothing else, it is good research practice.Dave
