I frequently do troubleshooting on electric for other folks and was wondering if any electricians out there had an opinion on the testers produced by Gardner Bender?

you've got a better memory than I do about it
The Fluke 322 is my newest. Pretty bad azz. I think your thinking of the Cat5 mapper I bought not to long ago.

I have no idea which one.
I just remember you talking about some new electrician's gadget <G>
That was probably it. It's pretty handy.

GB is a decent brand, Fluke is probably a hair better.
But what do you mean by "tester"? It can mean anything from a neon light to a $500 gizmo.
Your most basic tool would probably be a "wiggy". I've got a Sperry "Voltecctor" I picked up a few days back at Lowes for under $20 -- it's a decent choice.
Next electrical tool would probably be a clamp-on ammeter. These run from about $50 up to several hundred.
Not really anything else beyond these two that one would need for electrical troubleshooting, though you can get a lot fancier doing computer wiring, etc.
Sperry "wiggy" on the left, Micronta (Radio Shack) clamp on ammeter on the right:

no idea.. Fluke here..
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
WOW!!! What a Ride!
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
technically, you need to be concerned with surges and transients, just like the rest of us.
There are four categories:
I
II
III
and IV
if you are only dealing with ordinary power in homes, you wont need more expensive equipment than that rated forCat II
go here,

and click on ..... "ABCs of DMM safety, Cat IV can really mess up your DMM. Worse yet, it can kill you."
even though the subject is DMMs, ordinary voltage testers are being ....recertified.....
BTW, I have used, in no specific order
Knopp,
Ideal,
SquareD...the orginal "Wiggy"
Etcon
Greenlee
and Fluke

Yeah, remember their motto: If it works it's a Fluke.

I've got that little flashlight too. The damn clip broke off it though. I keep it tucked in my pocket all the time. I think this is the longest I've gone without losing a flashlight in a long time.

I saw a multi meter get killed by a 37.4 kv dc arc. A power supply voltage quadrupler was defective and the meter lead was several inches away when the technician holding it got a surprise.
Said he didn't feel anything, but I saw his hair stand straight up and flop back to normal. The arc was very impressive, and LOUD.
well it's time to drag out my favorite picture of 5Kv givin it up....no one was hurt.....I just happened to be standing there with my camera.....37.4Kvdc?........ no thanks, 130Vdc creeps me out

Fortunately the 37.4 kv power supply was low current, totally unlike your situation.
I was working on a 25 kv monitor one time, and it had to be taken completely apart to get to the problem. The dag fingers that ground the CRT were disconnected, and I went to move the tube for better viewing. Got great contact to the conductive coating on the tube. Felt like a sonic boom inside, with a train running into me. Burned my fingers and toes. Took several days before all the muscles quit hurting from contracting so hard.
.believe me when I sayI do feel your pain.

Damn that's nasty. I fired a .45 auto once in a small Mustang with the windows up. Not near as bad as yours but I can relate somewhat.
What did you do first? Change your pants? Or drain your boots?

Had to pick myself up from the floor and assess the damage. Not too bad that time considering the pain involved. Someone I worked with got a 900 volt dc hit and spent 2 days in the hospital on a heart monitor after her heart started irregular beating. She quit after that to sell real estate. She was an electronics instructor in the Air Force, but couldn't fix a thing. I was glad she got out before she killed herself.
I don't really want to know why you shot a 45 in a car with the windows. This is for the record in case I ever get subpoenaed.
LOL Just remember next time I say. No farting in the car. I mean it.
I've had a couple GB's There's nothing wrong with them. Fluke is my main meter of choice, I've got a few different kinds of those. You can get one that does everything you need for around a hundred.
But to get back to what your asking. Gardner Bender is just fine.
