Newbie and Harry Homeowner here looking for some advice.
The 28″ of snow we got here in MD damaged our front porch ceiling. The roof has been fixed, but I’m trying to decide what to do on the ceiling.
Previously there was dry wall, taped up and painted, but I wanted something water-resistant, so I went with plywood OSB primed, 3/8″ thick. Yesterday I nailed/screwed the plywood up to keep squirrels out of that mini-attic (it’s separate from the main attic).
So Phase I is complete, but I’m trying to decide how to finish it. Should I add some sort of texture to it? The previous owner had those dots that you add to the paint, which looked OK I guess.
Or should I cover it with vinyl or something else? That might be more durable if moisture ever finds its way back.
How should I close the seams and cover the screw heads? Tape? Mud?
Any and all help is appreciated, even if you tell me to hire someone who knows what he is doing! 🙂

You could cover it with vinyl soffit material if you like the looks. It's a good product, but it looks cheesy to me. It's pretty popular around here.

Board and bead soffit paneling. Comes in exterior grade for paint or stain. A little more expensive tha 3/8 osb, but goes up with galv. finish nails and glue. Trim edges with 1 3/4" crown mldg., fill nail holes and paint or stain and finisho your taste.
That's probably what I'll do - vinyl or aluminum soffit. Found a web site and looks like they come in 2' wide sheets, usually 8' long.
I want to keep it vented and don't want to paint. In fact the other portions of the house are painted and the paint is peeling a little, so I'll have to work on that pretty soon as well.
Hope I didn't waste money putting in the OSB plywood, but I wanted to seal it to keep squirrels out for now. It was also hideous looking with that gaping hole.
4 ideas in 24 hours, not bad folks! Thanks.

Beaded vinyl soffit looks good for what it is. Wolverine makes a nice one. They have a vented style but with the sheeting above, you no get-a vent-a.

That stuff looks nice.
Can I find something like that at Home Depot? Installation looks pretty straight forward.

Sure you can, I would go to a siding supplier, but as a last resort, sure. Make sure you get a reputable brand it wolverine isn't available. Beaded soffit, ventilated or not, you be the judge. Goes nice and looks better if you don't pc it in. Don't know your layout, but think along those lines. Can sit in J-channel on the ends or you can slip a pc. of trim up there which might look better. best of luck.__________________________________________

3/8" AC Fir Plywood has a nice coarse texture. Typically used on soffits for overhangs and porches. Could paint or stain & seal depending on your taste.
