I told the neighbor I would ask you guys…
I have a neighbor that has just purchased a lot and is getting ready to start to build in the next few months and during our discussion, he made a stament that he’s using t&g for the roof sheeting and since it is required to have a completed sheeting/shear on all exterior walls, he is plan on using the same t&g on the wall (horizontal) If he does this, does it alieviate him need blocking as when you but one sheet on top of the other? My thinking is that it can’t be done, because the edges that are butted(top and bottom) need to be structurally fastend together with nails on the 2×4 or 3×4 blocking( as per nailing schedule), not with just panel adhesive in the t&g.
Does this sound correct?
He has a brother that works in a plywood mill and can get the 3/4″ T&G for less than most people get 1/2 cdx of structural OSB. He said he gets 1 1/8 T&G for around $18-$22 a sheet, at least this is what he tells me.

Obviously he's never built a house before. The weight of 3/4 T&G would be hell to work with. I'm not sure if I would use it if it were free!
You get out of life what you put into it......minus taxes.

"Obviously he's never built a house before."
my thoughts exactly.
That was my first though too. But then again, running it horizintal might not be too bad. Putting the next sheet on top would have something to distribute the weight on. I told him that "technically" the nails should be longer as he said "who's going to know?"
But then again he is cheap. He's has spent the last 6-12 months buying left over/damaged TGI's from various local builders. He designed his garage to fit the "discounted" trusses he picked up for half the garage. The rest were ordered to match, and they don't match too well. He also over paid about 2x what they should have been. They have been laying in the dirt on his property for 4 weeks now. No protection or stickering to lay flat. Truss guys says it will cost another $300 to lift them on the walls, when ready.
The guy that's doing the framing for him has lost his driver's license for not paying child support. So he will have to pick him up and take him home every day
Bro your neighbor is gonna get what he deserves for being CHEAP! Not frugal, CHEAP!
But anyway, maybe 5/8" T&G OSB on the roof would make a nice solid base for roofing and would alleviate the need for clips, but on a wall, that's just silly, not to mention wasteful.
Sometimes ya just gotta nod your head..."Yeah man, that sounds great!" ;-)

LOL...that is perfect.....lol
by the way what is code where you are as far as clips go..around here clips are only required if you're going with 1/2".
So the HO is giving his framer a ride everyday...wonder if thats coming out of his bill??
99% of the time we use 7/16 OSB roof and walls with clips on the roof with rafters 24" OC, 2x4 studs 16" OC.
I have used 5/8" 4-ply on one house roof and walls (with clips on roof), but he was an engineer.Jason Pharez Construction

Ok..yeah I've done a house with my brother and he used the 7/16" osb with clips. other than that I've never used osb before, always ply. The guys I work with always ask the GC for 5/8 ply so we don't have to use the clips.
T&G sheathing on the roof and the walls is ridiculous even if his brother can get it cheaper than 1/2".
See if his brother can get him 2x12's for the same price as 2x4's to use for the walls................;-)
