Howdy all –
Got a porch ceiling I’m working on (my own), and wanted to check myself a bit here…
Most of the ceiling (the flat part) is done with a Plybead clone (next time I use the real stuff – this wasn’t quite the same quality). For the bit right above the front door, which is vaulted (for lack of a better word), I’m using 1×4 T&G pine beadboard.
The 3/8 beaded ply was secured with 1-5/8″ 5d ring-shank siding nails on the joists (16″ centers).
For the real 3/4 beadboard, I have a choice of the same nails or SS 16-gauge finish nails, w/ maybe a squirt of adhesive behind for good measure. Which would you use? My inclination is to use the ringshanks, but I’ve been known to be full of it.
Also, the stuff will be backprimed, end-sealed, etc to within an inch of its life. I presume it’d be okay to set the nails, then fill and paint over?
Howzabout on the plywood – would y’all recommend the set/fill/paint shuffle on that as well?
Thanks.
Jason

For the real T&G beadboard, I'd definitely blind nail it with finish nails (I get real good results with my 16ga gun). It looks a whole lot better and I'd be worried that you might get some splits with the 5d nails. Some adhesive on the back side wouldn't hurt, either.
I'll let someone else comment on the painting aspects.

Use Azek beadboard. No matter what Piffen says.
No back and end-priming.

<Edit> DougU says ignore this. Also, why is it 3/4 not 3/8"?

Sounds like he's already picked out the material, needs advice on that product not Azek!

DougU says ignore this.
*snork* Yeah - the price of the Azek pretty much put it right out.
(edit: the "why" is that this is a BIG porch for new construction. Big wraparound thing, about 60LF by 6-8' deep.)
Also, why is it 3/4 not 3/8"?
Which? The beaded plywood is 3/8". Well, 11/32" actually. The beaded T&G pine boards are 3/4". Dunno why, except I'd think it'd be interesting to install 3/8 x 4 boards 12 foot long. Reeeally floppy.

I used my 15ga finish nailer for mine (I installed all 1x4 T&G). Worked great. No adhesive. Having to deal with the mess of glue at the same time as wrestling those boards together would have been a nightmare.I backprimed and end-primed mine, sunk all of the nails with no filler, and went from there. Two coats of latex. It's a porch, so it's not getting any direct exposure. Hopefully, that'll be good enough.I did mine 3 years ago. Not one indication of trouble... yet.
