JohnTN | Posted in Photo Gallery on November 24, 2004 04:54am

Greetings all,

Its been a while now, but back in the Spring of 03, I posted a hardwood flooring question and several folks were kind enough to respond:

http://forums.taunton.com/tp-breaktime/messages?msg=30703.1

This was part of a kitchen remodel which is now complete.  I’d like to say thanks to all who responded to my earlier post, as well as to the many of you who helped and didn’t even know it via your informative posts here on a multitude of topics.

Here’s a few shots of what we started with.  This is a 1957 model ranch lake house on Old Hickory Lake, just outside Nashville, TN.

I’ll post a few of the finished product in the next series.

John

Here are a couple of shots of the finished product:

A few of the finished floor.  This is 1 1/2" clear red oak.  We sanded and finished the floors in the rest of the house, but the kitchen was too far gone to save.  Carpet, two layers of vinyl and water damage took its toll.

Here are a couple of the island.  We kept the original cabinets and island.  They were solid pine.  We kept the solid pine paneling as well.  All sealed with 123 and painted.  I had new poplar doors and drawers made for the cabinets and the island.  All installed with new hardware and roller slides.

There is a lot of cabinet work here that isn't immediately obvious.  You can see in the "before" shots that there was no dishwasher and the refrigerator opening was much smaller.  I re-worked the cabinets to accomodate the dishwasher and bumped out the cabinets over the fridge so they would be flush with the new unit.  Took a couple of inches off to create a taller opening as well.

I opened up the old pocket door to the living room and cased it out.  Really opens up the space and allows the two rooms to flow together.

Here are a few more shots of the lake that the kitchen overlooks.

Thanks again guys.  Your input, suggestions and critiques are welcome and appreciated.

            John,

Man, I thought my kitchen looked bad!  I do have the same beautiful vinyl though :-)

Thanks for sharing, and for inspiring me to get the digital camera so that I can easily post as my kitchen remodel gets going next spring.  Like you I have learned so much here and would love to give back.

Wow, John.......I'm not one of the guys, but that is quite a difference......Didn't you just love those colors in the old kitchen?......:) I bet your wife is pleased!

Tennessee, huh?  Husband and I are scouting places to move as I just retired.......Looks nice.....

          7. JohnT8 | Nov 24, 2004 06:16pm | #15

            Looks great.

Can you post a an 'after' pic with the same angle as the "before1" pic?  I want to put them side to side and see the contrast.

            John,

Here are before and after shots taken from the same angle:

John, your sign on is only one character different than mine... I feel like I'm replying to myself.

But that certainly is a "wow" when looking at the before and after!   A really good example of working with what you've got as well as adding new elements to create a fantastic new kitchen.  You and your family should be very proud of the results.  I imagine the kitchen is a lot more functional now too.

            John,

Thanks for the kind words.  We really enjoy the new kitchen.  The old one wasn't really dysfunctional, but was just not a pleasant room to spend time in.  The new kitchen is a pleasant place to be, even when we're not cooking.

Here are some of the products we used:

            Kichler halogen under-cab lighting

Halo 5" cans with halogen lamps

            All lighting on dimmers

            Bosch Dishwasher

            Thermador oven/microwave combo

            Silestone Countertops

Custom fabricated stainless steel back splash

            InSinkErator hot/cold filtered water dispenser

            InSinkErator disposal

            Wolf 36" pseudo-pro rangetop

Wolf vent hood with 1400 CFM remote blower

            GE countertop-depth fridge

I'd give a thumbs-up to everything in the list.  There isn't anything I wouldn't reccomend and wouldn't hesitate to use any of these in the future.

A few words regarding Thermador customer service - the main relay board in the oven died about three months out of warranty.  Appears that the points welded shut.  Called Thermador to complain and was given an authorization number to cover the cost of parts and repair, no questions asked.  Great job, Thermador - kudos for going above and beyond the call to take care of the situation.

          11. CaroleG4 | Nov 24, 2004 10:52pm | #20

John, those appliances look great......I know you will enjoy your Thermador even though I don't have one........I especially like the lighting.....

            Now, what's for Thanksgiving??

          12. JohnTN | Nov 24, 2004 11:36pm | #21

            Pi,

I don't know what's up with the colors in the old kitchen.  However, my guess is that whoever built that kitchen in the 50's was proud of their work also - different tastes for different times, I suppose.

Ashamed to admit, but we'll be doing Thanksgiving with family at mom and dad's place, so the pots will all be cold this weekend!

            Happy Thanksgiving to all

            John

          13. CaroleG4 | Nov 25, 2004 01:26am | #22

Ah, John, you must be young.....:)   The colors remind me of my parents' kitchen: red, avocado.......I love the retro look, but, sometimes you have to cool those colors down.....

We're having our family here, too......12 and if someone else shows up, I'll just add another potato to the pot........

            Seriously, the difference is amazing......

            Happy Thanksgiving.......

Nice work, there sure is a huge difference, quit the contrast.

            You should be pleased.

Quite a bit of crown in the room.  A whole house full of inside and outside corners in this one room.  I think I counted 23.

I love the new kitchen...so much light!  A major difference, congratulations.

Are you sure that's the same house? Wow. It really looks nice. What a great transformation. I'm sure you must be thrilled. Nicely done.
