Just another cold, wet, wet, wet, wet, wet, boring, lonely day...

*luka, sorry for the weather... but i bet it's a lot cozier in your new digs than in your old ones...wish you were here with us....

      1. Luka_ | Nov 22, 2001 10:51pm | #3

*Woo hoo ! Yes ! Much cozier. I actualy have a lot to be thankful for. And one of the biggest is this trailer. Thank you once again, JimL.Hey Mike, I have a wall all ready to be stood up on the new 'front room'. Well, I have to get the tarpaper on it first, because it's the one that goes directly up against the trailer. It is sheeted with osb, and right now it is getting completely waterlogged. The rain is coming down hard. Been that way since late last night. I'm going to have to take a chance on it, and go ahead and paper it and stand it up when the rain lets up. If I wait on no rain at all, I'll be waiting all winter.

*Mike, Is there a big ole labrador asleep on the rug in front of the fireplace too? Looks like a nice place for many enjoyable dinners. Happy post Thanksgiving Day.

          10. Mike_Smith | Nov 23, 2001 08:09pm | #14

*bill, nope ...used to be a big ole ridgeback.. but now it's just me and helen and a house full on holidays...

          11. Cloud_Hidden | Nov 23, 2001 09:39pm | #15

*MIL, BIL and his son, plus enough food for 20 more. A friend of BIL's called. Long haul trucker out of Anchorage, but driving by Western NC toward Nashville. So we added him to the fray. We all felt good that he wasn't alone for the holiday. Spent day installing more flooring in library. Spent afternoon teaching a few of my daughter's gymnastics skills to my Down's nephew. Spent evening with comeraderie and food, followed by getting my head handed to me on the pool table. Ended it with my daughter curling up on my lap on the sofa to get warm and fall asleep. Does it get any better?

          12. Pete_Draganic | Nov 24, 2001 01:04am | #16

*Hey gang,Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday, was just as grand as it could be this year. Our first time having a big dinner at our house. And the food?...... Oh my lord!... better than you coulda had at the Whitehouse... no foolin.Lot's of laughs and great company. We had 18 for dinner and 4 more stopped afterwards for coffee, desert and conversation.Pete "thankful to have so much to be thankful for" Draganic

          13. lonecat | Nov 24, 2001 01:20am | #17

*Wife had to work at the police department. I needed to rest my carpel tunnels, but inactivity stresses me so took a big valium and didn't hit a lick all day. Local restaurants send turkey dinners to PD and there was enough for me, too. Back up on a nasty roof today.

          14. Lisa_Long | Nov 24, 2001 03:06am | #18

*Houseful of family from out of state, too much to eat, jigsaw puzzles until 2 a.m., and little kids everywhere you turned. Just as it should be. Especially thankful this year for the 13 years of love and affection from our Golden Retriever "Duke". He died on Monday. I hope there are tennis balls in heaven.

          15. Pi | Nov 24, 2001 03:27am | #19

*Took Thanksgiving off this year......Worked out all the logistics with the kids(we do Christmas Eve, 25 or more people)......We had Thanksgiving dinner with two of our closest and dearest friends.....Prime Rib with twice baked potatoes, asparagus with caper sauce, two wines we had been saving for a special occasion, pistachio flan with caramel sauce(our two friends are foodies and we really had to impress them )....

          16. Pete_Draganic | Nov 24, 2001 03:31am | #20

*Pi,At the risk of sounding dumb, you are a teacher.... don't you have Thanksgiving off, automatically?

          17. Pi | Nov 24, 2001 03:37am | #21

*Uh, don't tempt me, Pete......Clarification: My husband and I have been cooking Thanksgiving dinner for 15 years at our house....I've been waiting patiently for the torched to be passed..........We informed the kids last Thanksgiving that we would not be cooking Thanksgiving dinner next year and they were on their own...The reason we invited our friends this year(also invited the kids, but since we were not having turkey, they declined) is that she is battling some serious health problems as is he......If it makes you feel any better, I have had school off since Tuesday......Happy Thanksgiving, me boy........

          18. Mike_Smith | Nov 24, 2001 03:38am | #22

*pete... sometimes i think yur denz.. having thanksgiving "off" means it ain't yur turn to be the hostess...but then us "hosts" wouldn't know that much about it..you know the drill ..."lead , follow , or get back in the family room and watch football...."

*Shooda took ya up on dat bet.b : )No sun at all today. Rain about half the time. Got the wall finished, and set up though. Dang that thing was heavy. Tore my jeans about halfway down my thigh, while straining to get the blamed thing up there. It's up and braced off. I'm happy with the day's work.

*Michael and his family always trade off the holidays, and it's great! That way, no one feels obligated every year to do the duty, while the others just enjoy the spoils.Of course, we love our family dearly, it's always wonderful when they go home and we have our own little world back.......now if only they could take the dirty dishes with them....

          26. Mike_Gabriel | Nov 24, 2001 06:51pm | #30

*Lisa, you bet there's tennis balls up there!! And GIANT chewies too.So sorry to hear about your loss. I'm sure Duke is napping in the sun with a full belly, snoring.Mike

*Be glad to, phil.....*Spear Ecstasy - Aspragus with Lemon/Tarragon/Caper Sauce3/4 cup sour cream1/4 cup mayo3 T. chopped red onion2 T. lemon juice1 T. plus 1 t. capers, drained and chopped 2 t. lemon zest2 t. dried tarragon(or fresh, but use more)1/2 t. onion powder1/2 t. sugar Pepper to tasteMix all ingredients and refrigerate until chilled(can be made up to 2 days in advance and refrigerated...In fact, it's even better when made aheadThis sauce is great with warm or cold asparagus and grilled salmon....Yum......Carole(Pi)

          30. kai_ | Nov 26, 2001 12:21am | #34

*Yummy, Pi, thanks! I don't care for tarragon and have made something similar w/basil or dill, leeks instead of red onions, and no sugar. Another idea, use the caper juice instead of lemon. No clue abt the amts, however. To taste, I suppose. And Phil, "mayo" = Best Foods (West coast) or Hellman's (East coast).

          31. Pi | Nov 26, 2001 01:09am | #35

*Tarragon is one of my favorites and one herb I can grow with regularity here in the NE.....Our twice baked potatoes had dill(another one of my favorites) but one that I can't grow well......If I lived where you are Kai, I would have the biggest herb garden imaginable.......Thanks for the heads up on Mayo.....

          32. kai_ | Nov 26, 2001 01:22am | #36

*Pi, I simply must find a simple recipe for something using tarragon that makes me like it. Too often (er, always) I think "this s/b in licorice." Small consolation for you, I can't grow dill either! I think it gets cross-pollinated (sp?) w/the wild fennel which is everywhere. (I've also bought "dill" seeds that grew to become fennel.)As for mayo: wow, I cannot believe the number of people who think "salad dressing" is "mayo." They are different animals. Personally, I hate the taste of that sicky sweet "salad dressing," but some folks like it. The recipe you posted would be yucky, I suspect, if one subbed salad dressing for mayo. However, I bet one could sub yogurt cheese for the sour creme. Thanks again.

          33. Pi | Nov 26, 2001 01:50am | #37

*Kai, are we on Cooks Talk? Hope the guys are getting an earful....We do a simple roast chicken rubbed with dried tarragon, butter and pepper......Stuff the inside with lemons and let her rip! This simple reciple was given to me by a catering friend who studied in France......It was the first roast chicken I made for my husband and he loved it......As Julia says, the simpler, the better....Are you using French Tarragon?

          34. kai_ | Nov 26, 2001 02:08am | #38

*LOL I'm sure someone (you and I, at the least) are loving this :-)I'll try that chicken recipe, thanks. Can't recall the type of tarragon, but I've tried French before--still licorice-y to me.

          35. phil_eves | Nov 26, 2001 03:31am | #39

*...put this sauce on a cedar-grilled salmon...THERE, now it's wood related!

          36. Pi | Nov 26, 2001 03:58am | #40

*You got it....I have never cedar-grilled salmon, but am willing......
