What do you guys think? Wanna buy a present for someone who already has Makita stuff, which makes the Makita 5090DW 3-3/8″ Cordless Circular Saw a natural; but I wondered what you guys thought about it in the field (it’s the 9.6 volt version, for light duty, say less than 150 feet per day cuts in wood only).
They make a 14.4 volt one (Makita 5094DWD 14.4-Volt 3-3/8″ Cordless Circular Saw) but I didn’t know if anyone thought it was really that much better; and how much of a hassle is it to have two different battery systems?
DeWalt seems to make a cordless cutting wheel tool, but that doesn’t seem to answer for the wood cuts this guy does 99% of the time.

It's best if you match the size of the largest battery i.e., 14.4v, 18v, etc. that he uses. Thus, even if he rarely uses the saw, he won't have to charge up the "odd" size battery.
I have an 18v Bosch and it has just enough power to be it useful- at times.
The awful thing is that beauty is mysterious as well as terrible. God and the devil are fighting there, and the battlefield is the heart of man.

Why not ask the recipient if the saw would be useful to him/her?
Newer Makita chargers will charge almost all of their batteries. I know the 14v charger will charge the 9v batteries, so the need for two chargers is eliminated. The fast charger is better yet.
If you buy it locally, then exchanging it shouldn't be a big deal.
Yep; actually, it's what he keeps kvetching he wishes he had for those overhead, tight spot cuts.
So I figured as a thanks for doing some good stuff, I'd pick him up one.

I've got the little Dewalt saw. I'm pretty sure it's the 14 volt battery. My main complaint is the lack of long lasting power. Batteries are about 4 years old now, so they may be getting tired. (It's been sitting more than used.)
When you really need it, it's great, but I've learned not to use it more than you really need to. Rather use the big one, or a different tool.

I have the 12v makita and the small blade and slow cutting speed make it very weak. I also have the ridgid 18 volt saw came with two batts and a quick charger (30 mins) I'm very impressed with it, standard blade cuts smooth an at a fair pace and the batts last much longer than the charge time. The only problem I had was fitting it all in the bag it came with!!! It all fits ONLY one way!! Home Depot $100.
